Specialization: Prof. Amiel serves as Director of the Urology Department at Rambam Health Care Campus.

Education: Prof. Amiel graduated from the Ben-Gurion University Medical School in Beer-Sheva. He is a Captain in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Prof. Amiel completed his residency in urology at the Bnai-Zion Medical Center in Haifa, in which capacity he dedicated the years 1998 through 2000 to basic science research. Department of Urology at Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, under the supervision of Dr. Anthony Atala. After completing his urologic residency in Israel in 2003, Prof. Amiel pursued a combined clinical and research fellowship in urologic oncology and minimally invasive surgery at the Scott Department of Urology, Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas, from 2004 to 2006.

Clinical Experience: Prof. Amiel established a tissue-engineering laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine that focuses on translational research in genitourinary reconstruction. In 2007, he joined the faculty at Baylor as an Associate Professor, the Director of Education, and the Director of the Laboratory for Genitourinary Tissue Engineering in the Scott Department of Urology.

Prof. Amiel accepted the position of Director of the Department of Urology at Rambam in 2015. Additionally, he holds the position of adjunct Associate Professor at the Scott Department of Urology, Baylor College of Medicine.

His clinical practice consists of urologic oncology and genitourinary reconstruction. Prof. Amiel performs robotic, laparoscopic, and open surgery for bladder, kidney, prostate, testis, and penile cancer, including robotic partial nephrectomy, robotic cystectomy, salvage, and complex reconstructive urinary operations. One of his many notable achievements is the establishment of the very first robotic cystectomy program in Israel at Rambam. He has performed nearly 30 such surgeries since the end of 2015.

Prof Amiel was recently the recipient of the Clinical Research Institute of Rambam (CRIR) grant. He is now in the process of establishing the Laboratory for Genitourinary Reconstruction at the Clinical Research Institute at Rambam

Research and Academic Activities: Prof. Amiel focuses his research on genitourinary reconstruction utilizing biological matrices and adipose stem cells. His clinical research projects are concerned with treatments for bladder cancer, prostate cancer, and cancer education.

Professional Activity: Prof. Amiel served as the president of the American Association for Cancer Education (AACE) until October of 2015. He is now serving as the chairman of the Advisory Board to the AACE, and is a member of the American Urological Association (AUA), the Urology Research Foundation (URS), the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN), the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS), the Israel Medical Association (IMA), and several other organizations.

Social Activity: Prof. Amiel is the associate editor of the Journal of Cancer Education. He is also a reviewer for several urological, educational, and bioengineering journals. He has additionally co-written more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

Awards: Prof. Amiel has 16 grants to his name thus far, including an NIH-SBIR Grant totaling over 3 million dollars.
